Moving from California to Prescott, Arizona
Most Californians relocating to Prescott are trading traffic and high costs for four mild seasons, more land and a slower pace. Arizona's flat 2.5% income tax and lower property taxes can save retirees thousands a year, Social Security isn't taxed by either state, and Prescott is about a 5½–6 hour drive from Orange County or San Diego.
California is where most of my relocation clients are coming from, especially Orange County and San Diego. The conversation usually starts the same way: "We love California, but we're ready for something quieter." Prescott gives you that small-town feel and room to breathe, while still being a reasonable drive (or a short United flight from Prescott to LAX) from the kids, grandkids and friends you're leaving behind.

What changes when you move from California to Prescott
Taxes
Arizona has a flat 2.5% state income tax, while California taxes pensions and IRA withdrawals as ordinary income at rates up to 13.3%. Neither state taxes Social Security. Property taxes here are also typically lower than a new California purchase.
Prop 13
If you've owned your California home a long time, Prop 13 may be keeping your current property tax low. Use your actual bill in the calculator below for a truer comparison.
Home & land
Many California buyers find they can get more land, more privacy, a newer home, or a nicer finish level here. Some buy outright with room to spare.
Insurance
Wildfire coverage has become hard to find in much of California. In Prescott it varies a lot by neighborhood: easier in town and around the Dells, harder in the forest. Get quotes during your inspection period.
Weather
No ocean breeze, but real seasons: summer highs in the upper 80s, crisp fall afternoons, and a little snow in winter that usually melts within a day or two.
Pace of life
Prescott traffic is a few cars at the light on Gurley Street. You'll find a walkable historic downtown, 100+ miles of trails, and neighbors who wave.
California vs. Prescott: taxes for retirees
Pensions, IRA and 401(k) withdrawals. Leave out Social Security; Arizona doesn't tax it.
Add your actual bill for a truer comparison, especially if you've owned a long time (hello, Prop 13).

For illustration only, not tax advice. It assumes age 65+ and that your income is pension/IRA withdrawals, and uses approximate 2024–2026 state rules and standard deductions plus median effective property tax rates (Ownwell, 2025–26); Prescott uses Yavapai County's ~0.46%. It leaves out credits, local add-ons and your specific situation. Please confirm with your CPA.
