Moving from the Midwest to Prescott, Arizona

The quick answer

Midwest retirees moving to Prescott usually come for two reasons: winters and property taxes. Prescott-area property tax rates are a fraction of many Midwest states (Cook County's median rate is over four times Yavapai County's), and snow here melts in a day or two. Illinois doesn't tax retirement income, so the calculator shows both sides honestly.

My Midwest clients are some of the friendliest people I work with, and they fit right into Prescott's community feel. Most are ready to trade long, gray winters for sunshine, and they're often amazed at how much lower their property tax bill can be.

It assumes age 65+ and that your income is pension/IRA withdrawals, and uses approximate 2024–2026 state rules and standard deductions plus median effective property tax rates (Ownwell, 2025–26); Prescott uses Yavapai County's ~0.46%. Common questions

Moving from the Midwest to Prescott: quick answers

Are property taxes lower in Prescott than in Illinois?

Usually by a lot. Yavapai County's median effective property tax rate is about 0.46%, compared with roughly 2.1% in Cook County. On a $1 million home that's a difference of well over $10,000 a year.

Does Arizona tax retirement income?

Arizona doesn't tax Social Security. Pensions and IRA withdrawals are taxed at a flat 2.5%. If you're coming from Illinois, which exempts retirement income, that's a new cost, but property tax savings often outweigh it.

What are winters like in Prescott compared to the Midwest?

Much milder and sunnier. Highs are usually around 50 degrees, nights in the 20s, and the occasional snowfall usually melts within a day or two.
